The Invisible Backpack – Travel Light to Travel Far

Cesare Pavese says, “If you want to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness, and fears.”

We all travel through life with memories, experiences, and stories that serve as the backdrop of our lives. We approach each new encounter carrying an invisible backpack filled with everything we believe we need to successfully navigate through life. If we took a careful look in our backpacks, we would find joyful memories, satisfying aha moments, financial successes, hopes, and dreams. These are packed side by side with sadness, unforgiveness, losses, and fears. Even though our lives are filled with a cornucopia of experiences, often we discount the good and amplify the bad.

Psychologists have discovered that in spite of the good things we have accomplished, negative emotions are processed in a different hemisphere in the brain than positive emotions. Because of this, negative emotions require more thinking and more information to resolve. In addition, Professor Roy Baumeister, co-author of Bad is Stronger than Good, discovered that bad experiences have more impact on us than good ones. This makes it easy for us to forget the things for which we are grateful.

To lighten our bags and empty our invisible backpacks so we can travel fast, we must unpack the negative beliefs, unforgiving attitudes we have justified hanging onto and the “they did me wrong” stories. We must eliminate as many of the things that weigh us down as we can.

Start transforming your life and unpacking your backpack by doing the following:

Remember the Good that happens to you. Five (5) good things will change one (1) negative experience. This is an excellent time to start a Gratitude Journal or a “Daily Miracle Journal.” List five or more things for which you are grateful. In gratitude, there are no limits; there are no big or small miracles. There is only gratitude. In a year, you will have from 365 – 1,825 “daily” miracles.

Brag Lists. Create a list of things you have accomplished that you can brag about. Try to list seven things. Keep this list readily available and review it weekly at a minimum. Your brag list will remind you that in the midst of every new storm that you are pretty amazing and have already conquered many storms. When life whispers “You cannot withstand the storm.” You reply, “I AM the storm.”

Identify the Miracle. Each experience brings with it a litany of lessons and blessings. List the lessons learned, the insights gained. If you cannot change the situation, use the lessons learned and the ideas gained so you can change how you think about it. Asking yourself how you can grow from this experience will help you find the golden nugget in the midst of what you perceived to be darkness.

Now your bags are lighter. What is your next stop?

Get on-board. Your dream is waiting.

Dream Big! Live the life you have imagined.

Remember, life is too short to drink cheap …

Vacation Certificate Incentives – Creative Marketing Incentives

Businesses are really getting creative in their marketing efforts during this economic hardship our nation is facing.  Retail clothing stores have been seen giving customers a 3 day 2 night Las Vegas hotel stay to the first 100 customers that come down to their store, no purchase necessary.  The same retail store also ran a second promotion where if a customer would spend $100 in the store they would upgrade their Las Vegas hotel stay with two round trip airfare tickets.  Car dealers are advertising free 2 night hotel certificates in many resort city destinations to customers that just come down for a test drive.  When the customer purchases a vehicle, they upgrade their hotel stay to a 7 night cruise for two to the Bahamas or Caribbean.  Vacation certificate incentives can work for virtually every industry.

Realtors are using vacation certificates to bring in more potential buyers to their open houses.  Insurance agencies offer vacation certificates to customers if they call for a free quote.  Then they upgrade the customers who purchase policies.   With vacation certificate incentives you can create very effective employee recognition and loyalty programs, customer retention programs, referral programs, customer loyalty programs, lead generation program, customer appreciation programs, etc.  When a businesses use incentives in conjunction with their existing advertising and marketing efforts, they can see a 30% increase in response rates to existing advertisements.  Vacation incentives help business ring in more paying customers from their existing marketing efforts and from their repeat and referral business.

Vacation certificate incentive companies can be found by going to Google and entering the keywords vacation certificates or even vacation incentives.  You will find hundreds of companies to choose from.  All businesses should be aware that 99% of these vacation certificate incentive companies work on a business model called “breakage”.  “Breakage” works like insurance.  Insurance companies charge you a monthly fee, in the hopes that you never go to the doctor.  These vacation certificate incentive companies do the same thing and charge you anywhere from $1.00 – $150.00 per certificate.  They do not have any real contracts with hotels, cruise ships, airlines, etc. but instead just get the commissions anytime they book a customer in a vacation at the published rack rate (the same rate you find on Expedia or Travelocity).  So let’s say you purchase 100 7 night cruise certificates at the going rate which is around $30.00.  You just paid $3000.00 to give 100 of your paying customers a vacation certificate.  The travel agency takes out $500 of the $3000.00 and pays the sales rep a commission.  Then they take $500 or so for their take and put $2000.00 in a reserve account to pay for the vacations when your customers try and redeem the vacation certificate.  The problem is that $2000.00 is not going to cover 100 7 night cruise getaways for two.  They bank on only a small percentage of your customers to redeem the vacation certificate just like an insurance company banks on the insured never go to the doctor.  When they …

How to Start Your Travel Journal

Writing a travel journal can be a fun experience. You will be jotting down everything from your travels around the world and creating a memorabilia of sorts. After a few years, the journal will be like a fountain of nostalgia for you. So, if you have been planning to begin a travel journal for quite some time now, here are a few tips that will help you get started.

Choose a Medium for Your Journal Entries

Most people love the idea of writing their travel stories in a leather bound notebook. However, if you want the world to read about your adventures, you can even start a blog and start putting in your entries. It could be anything from a small paragraph about the places you are visiting or your experiences. And if you have the time, you can even write complete How-to blogs to help other people plan their journeys.

Start Travelling ASAP

In order to be able to maintain a travel journal, you will first have to start travelling. Pick up a destination and go there. If you have a busy life, dedicate a certain period of the year to your travels. If you don’t have money, you can save up and plan a trip on a budget. For instance, you can easily book cheap flights well in advance so that you save both money and time.

Earn Experiences

There’s a reason why most people these days want to be travellers and not tourists. It’s because tourists go around a place, sightseeing the important monuments or historical landmarks. On the other hand, travellers explore the local culture and lifestyle of the people living there. So, while you are travelling, remember to not just see the important places but to also get a glimpse into the life and culture of the local people. This will instantly add a lot of value to your travel journal.

Eat a Variety of Delicious Dishes

One of the best things about travelling is that you will be able to try a variety of local dishes, that might not be available in your hometown. Try out local eateries and small places that make and sell authentic dishes. Before starting your journey, you can even do a little research about your destination to know about the best restaurants there.

Maintaining a travel journal is one of the most beautiful ways of documenting your life. Years later, when you will look back at your diary or blog, you will be hit with an instant burst of nostalgia. And then, you will be thankful for beginning your travel expeditions. Bon Voyage!…

Contract Furniture Manufacturers and Hotel Furniture Suppliers

Look to leading furniture manufacturers who specifically manufacture for the hospitality industry to supply quality furniture for your hotel. Whether you are interested in developing new furniture designs or purchasing value-engineered hotel furniture, working with qualified commercial or contract furniture manufacturers will give you everything that you need to distinguish your property and elevate your guest’s experience.

Quality materials and craftsmanship are of the utmost importance when purchasing hotel furniture. Reviewing a photo portfolio of a furniture manufacture’s past work, seeing their original designs and having their finish samples in hand will help you to qualify those who stand out in the field. Seek out a company with a turnkey approach. Your manufacturer should be willing to assist with design, create shop drawings, develop custom finishes and handle all elements of production and shipping. The most capable manufacturers will always customize designs and value engineer the pricing. Contract furniture is not subject to a cookie cutter approach and customization should always be possible at affordable prices. Successful hotel interior design projects regularly take nontraditional approaches and do things “outside of the box” while staying within the budget. Delivering high quality interior design for a hospitality setting requires identifying a qualified contract furniture manufacturer that is willing to work with your design ideas and meet your standards. Your project is unique and your brand matters- ultimately the furniture in your hotel must reflect this.

Re-branding is at the forefront of the hospitality market today as the leading hotels are seeking to distinguish themselves. Many hospitality companies and individual hotel properties are reinventing themselves to remain competitive in the marketplace. Innovative interior design and unique furnishings are central to this industry-wide push. Never underestimate the impression that quality furniture and quality furniture design makes on the guests at your hotel. The guest experiences your brand during each stay and their experience should be of the highest priority. The condition and quality of furnishings and style of furniture guest rooms dictates a key element of their experience. Hotel owners, commercial interior designers and purchasing companies should embrace this opportunity to create a unique experience for the guest. By delivering a unique and memorable environment for the guest they will continue to return.

The age-old argument of form vs. function is never more alive than in a hotel setting- especially in the hotel furniture design. Elements commonly found in highly designed, residential furniture don’t allow enough durability to withstand the demands of hotel use. By working with the right manufacturer suitable materials will be substituted and design engineering can be applied to resolve most challenges surrounding the debate of form vs. function. Great furniture design is very alive in the hospitality industry and it will continue to play a central role in years to come. Furniture designs reflecting the brand identity and overall aesthetic of the hotel will strongly emphasize both practicality and function. The right manufacturer will provide you with functional furniture that is attractive, high quality and suitably constructed for commercial use.…

Hawaii Vacation

I have been thinking about taking a vacation to Hawaii this year since our plans for Europe fell through. I wanted to ask travelers that have been to hawaii to get a first takers account of the Hawaii experience. I jumped on my computer and googled “hawaii vacation” the results that showed up were less then spectacular, “orbitz, travelocity, and expedia” all in the top ten? C’mon now I think the results should reflect more peoples content then the advertisers ads.

As I got to the third page of the Google results I finally found a website that would offer me some real information on Hawaii. The website was northshore.com, I have heard of the famous north shore of Hawaii when I was a kid. Lots of movies and films have been made depicting the popular surf and world class waves of Hawaii. I decided that I will take my vacation there on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

When planning activities to do on my trip, since I have a 12 year old and a 6 yr old. I decided to take the free Arizona memorial tour. This is the tour of the remains of the historical WWII pearl harbor attack. My next activity and all the rest of them will be scheduled on the north shore. Polynesian cultural center is the number one paid activity and I will definitely be taking my family to that attraction. Snorkeling, bottom fishing and horseback riding are the other activities that I will enjoy.

The northshore.com website is great as I was able to download coupons for all of my activities and also local information on things to do and places to eat. I actually found our place to stay on the northhshore.com website, we are staying in a vacation rental for a decent price.

Hope our trip goes well, I will write about the whole thing and report back. Our trip is in a couple of weeks.…

Business Travel Tips!

When you travel the world around you, it changes the world within you. That was one of my quotes a few years ago from my travel blog when I was blogging the World Tour. It holds true to this day, in my opinion.

I have traveled a lot these past 3 months, in particular, and am often asked how I do it. How do I maintain my energy, my focus, my connections, my health. So here are my best travel tips – try them, you’ll like them.

TIP #1 – MAINTAIN REGULAR SLEEP HABITS. This is normal for me, anyway, whether I am travelling or not. But when I am on the road, it is critical for me to get my sleep. I adjust to the time zone I am in and go with it. I ensure the room is dark, cool, quiet and normally, when at conferences, for example, I always room alone. I know that many people find great joy sharing a room when attending events. That doesn’t work for me because I get enough stimulation during the business days and meetings – I don’t need the additional stimulation of someone in my room wanting to de-brief for the next few hours. It’s my down time so that I can get mentally ready for a restful sleep. That also means limited electronics or TV.

TIP #2 – GET REGULAR EXERCISE. These days, that can mean just counting your steps in the airports – they are so HUGE! It takes a lot of time and a lot of steps to get around. I hired a personal trainer this year and, when I am at home, it makes a huge difference. When I am on the road, I stay accountable, get my exercise and post photos for my trainer so I show evidence of my commitment. At a minimum, I do some Yoga moves which helps with stretching after long plane rides. I bring my exercise DVD with me, too – me and Jillian Roberts – look out world!

TIP #3 – I MAKE GOOD FOOD CHOICES. There’s not really any reason to look at a menu when I travel. I know what I regularly eat for breakfast, lunch and supper – now, remember my 80/20 rule. When I am somewhere special (like in Africa – I WILL have the chocolate croissants… just sayin’!) – I will try different foods. But for normal travel – I stick with my regular food choices – and rarely will I have a drink when I am on the road. It ruins my sleep. I know it. So why do it?

TIP #4: I KEEP MY GRATITUDE JOURNAL. Next to my exercise clothes, my Gratitude Journal is the one thing that goes in the suitcase. It IS when I travel, that I realize and recognize what a blessed life I live and I want to keep my attitude of gratitude.

TIP #5: KEEP A SENSE OF HUMOR. Travel these days can be frustrating, challenging …

Vacation Apartment Rentals – Traveling With a Touch of Home

Seasoned travelers often tire of the standard routine of airplane, hotel, restaurant and visiting museums and cultural attractions. So as an alternative, some of these travelers look for ways to get more in touch with the local culture of the place they’re visiting. One way of doing this is short term, vacation apartment rentals.

Thanks to the Internet, renting a private apartment for a few days or a few weeks is fairly easy. What was once a niche market of rental properties available only in specialized catalogs, classified ads and by word of mouth, has grown into a cottage industry. Nowadays many landlords make their rental properties available only for short-term business or vacation rentals. Entire agencies are devoted to this market niche as well.

In fact finding accommodation in a private residence during your trip is quite easy. An Internet search turns up hundreds of available properties and dozens of agencies. In fact, the biggest challenge is not finding the apartments, it’s finding something that suits you, for a reasonable price, that is available when you need it.

Once you find a place, you’ll also want to have some way of knowing that what you see is what you’ll really get, so many travelers choose to work with reputable agencies or via a vacation rentals website. That way they will at least have some neutral authority to give them recommendations on their particular needs, as well as some recourse in the event of problems.

Of course, finding a rental apartment in a city you’ve never seen presents its own particular set of challenges. Most importantly, you’ll want to make sure that you do research on the neighborhood that you’ll be living in. In many large cities, neighborhoods can change dramatically in the space of just a few blocks. Doing your homework up front will help to make sure that your stay is an enjoyable one. Additionally, you need to try to have a basic idea of what you want from your vacation rental. Will it just be a place to sleep, or will your trip be a stay at home getaway for rest and relaxation. Different situations require different amenities, so be sure to ask about such things up front.

All in all, renting an apartment for a short period of time during a vacation is a sure way to a unique and rewarding travel experience. And one that let’s you get closer to the culture than you would by staying in a hotel.…
