The Memo: Trump travel plans reveal weakness in battlegrounds

Trump will travel to Iowa for a rally Wednesday and to Georgia, as well as Florida, on Friday.

The fact that those states are competitive is a warning sign about the president’s chances.

The travel decisions come at the same time as speculation mounts about the financial health of the president’s campaign. According to recent reports, the Trump campaign has pulled $17 million of planned ad spending from Iowa, New Hampshire and Ohio.

Campaign aides pushed back against the suggestion of a cash crunch during a conference call with reporters Monday. The move pertaining to advertising was characterized by them as a straightforward call to not take up the option of airtime that had been reserved months ago.

The president seems to have had his spirits lifted following his release from hospital, at least to judge from footage of him dancing briefly to The Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” at a rally in Sanford, Fla., on Monday.

At the same event, Trump said to cheers that he felt “so powerful” after his struggle with COVID-19 that “I will walk in there, I’ll kiss everyone in that audience. I’ll kiss the guys, and the beautiful women and everybody.”

Those comments again stirred up safety concerns as cases of coronavirus rise in many parts of the country. Trump is a big believer in the power of rallies to move the needle. He and his aides hearken back to the 2016 campaign as proof.

Trump, Biden trips illustrate Electoral College calculations

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (AP) — With Election Day just three weeks away, President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden concentrated Tuesday on battleground states both see as critical to clinching an Electoral College victory, tailoring their travel to best motivate voters who could cast potentially decisive ballots.

Biden was in Florida courting seniors, betting that a voting bloc that buoyed Trump four years ago has become disenchanted with the White House’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. It was Biden’s third visit to the state in a month, after making targeted appeals to other communities, including veterans and Latinos.

To Trump, “you’re expendable, you’re forgettable, you’re virtually nobody,” Biden said at a senior center in Pembroke Pines, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from Fort Lauderdale.

The “only senior Donald Trump seems to care about” is himself, Biden added.

Introducing Biden, Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz noted that “neither of these men will walk into the White House without the blessing of Florida seniors.”

“Much is made of the rise of the youth vote, and thank God for it,” the Florida congresswoman said. “But it’s residents 65 or older who still swing elections in the Sunshine State.”

Later, Biden was holding a voter mobilization rally in the heavily African American community of Miramar. His swing coincided with a $500,000 donation from billionaire former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg to increase Democratic turnout in Miami-Dade County.

Trump was staging an evening rally in Pennsylvania, Biden’s native state. The president wants to hammer home the claim that a Democratic administration could limit fracking in areas where the economy is heavily dependent on energy.

It’s an effort to fire up a conservative base that Trump will have to turn out in droves to secure the 270 electoral votes needed to retain the White House. The president also campaigned in Sanford, Florida, on Monday and will head back to the state on Friday.

Campaign travel on both sides comes against the backdrop of a second day of Senate hearings to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Trump and top Republicans see a swift confirmation just weeks after the death of liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as a chance to energize conservatives.

Biden’s campaign believes it can take the presidency without Florida’s 29 electoral votes, but it wants to lock up the state to pad a margin of victory over Trump, who has for months questioned the legitimacy of an election where many people will cast mail-in ballots during the pandemic. Biden has vowed to win Pennsylvania, but if he falls short, his path to victory narrows substantially.

Pennsylvania is the nation’s second-largest natural gas producer after Texas, and more natural gas was fracked from the state’s wells last year than in any previous year. Trump has repeatedly stated, falsely, that Biden will outlaw fracking. Biden has proposed only barring new leases on federal land, a fraction of U.S. fracking operations.

In a Democratic primary debate in March, Biden misstated his fracking policy, and

News outlets decline to send staff to travel with Trump over lack of coronavirus precautions

The New York Times reported Monday that The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post had joined the Times in declining to send reporters with the president in recent days, forcing the White House Correspondents’ Association to seek other journalists for White House press pool duties during those times.

Other outlets that have avoided press pool duty in recent days include BuzzFeed News, Politico and Hearst Newspapers, according to the Times.

“White House reporters had safety concerns and were not comfortable traveling with the president at this time,” said Elisabeth Bumiller, Washington bureau chief for the Times.

Reporters at the media outlets cited the failure by flight attendants, Secret Service agents and White House staffers to wear masks aboard the plane as a main reason for concern. Staffers have also been accused of returning to work before the end of two-week quarantine periods following infection or possible exposure to the coronavirus.

White House officials did not immediately return a request for comment.

Trump himself recently returned to the White House after a three-day hospitalization due to contracting COVID-19 and has been seen entering the White House and boarding Air Force One without a mask.

The president claimed on Twitter on Sunday morning that he is now “immune” from the virus, prompting Twitter to tag the tweet as misleading.
